The Mackay region is home to more than 30 white sandy beaches, Australia’s longest stretch of subtropical rainforest and one of the world’s best places to spot an elusive platypus in the wild. At the heart of the region is the Mackay city.
Famous for its pristine shoreline and reefs, the Coastal region features the glorious coastlines of the Hibiscus Coast and Laguna to the north, and the Serenity Coast to the south. At night guests can witness the breathtaking sunset on the beach with the kangaroos at Cape Hillsborough.
Just off the coastline, travellers can make the short boat trip to the beautiful, secluded islands of Keswick, St Bees, Carlisle or Scawfell where they can enjoy tranquil beachcombing, fishing, swimming and bushwalking.
Lindeman Island boasts 20 kilometres of bushwalking tracks and at Mount Oldfield, visitors can experience majestic 360 degree views of Pentecost, Hamilton and Whitsunday Islands, or for a more relaxed outing they can stroll through Butterfly Valley.
Heading to the Hinterland region, tourists can fossick for gold, tour the gem fields, visit a real working coal mine at Blair Athol and Peak Downs or experience life on the land at a farm stay.
