Sweeping from the Gulf of Carpentaria to the West Australian border, the vast Katherine and Surrounds region encompasses diverse landscapes and unique ecosystems.

The outback meets the tropics at Katherine, where the township is situated on the banks of the Katherine River which flows down from the world-renowned Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge). Offering outback adventure activities such as fishing, canoeing, bushwalking, bird watching, camping and four-wheel driving, the Nitmiluk National Park is full off hidden natural wonders and rich indigenous and pioneering history.

Take a day trip to Mataranka famous for its tropical thermal pool and nearby Elsey National Park, or travel south west of Katherine and visit the Victoria River, well known as a premier fishing destination.

Further north the Daly River was traditionally a meeting place for Aboriginal people and is now a popular fishing and camping area, renowned for its plentiful supply of barramundi. The Daly River area encompasses many unique ecosystems, including hot springs and gorges, making it a fantastic spot to camp and bushwalk.

Home to four main indigenous language groups- Yanuwa, Mara, Kurdanj and Karawa, the remote Gulf region now consist of some of Australia’s largest cattle stations. Just east of Katherine, this region is also perfect for adventurous anglers who enjoy fishing in remote rivers.
