Goldfields

Discover the history of Goldfields, Australia’s premier gold heritage region. Easily accessible from Melbourne, the region entices travellers with its grand streetscapes, historic architecture, gardens, art galleries, provincial food and wine, festivals and world-class attractions.

Visit the elegant regional city of Bendigo, the ideal base to explore Victoria’s golden heritage. Close by lies Dunolly with landscapes of stunning box and ironbark forest, productive farmland, vineyards and olive groves.

Known as the “Golden Triangle” for producing more gold nuggets than any other region in Australia, Dunolly and the surrounding district was also home to the then largest gold nugget in the world.

For those keen on bushwalking and photography, the small town of Heathcote rests at the foot of the McIvor and McHarg Ranges and it is also famous for its wineries and produce. Maldon is a charming goldmining town with some of the best preserved examples of an Australian gold mining town.

Located in the heart of Victoria’s Goldfields region lays Maryborough, the “railway station with a town attached”. Paved by gold, Castlemaine’s history and heritage is visible in its fine public buildings, wide streets, ornate hotels and century-old shops and finally Victoria’s largest inland city, Ballarat is famous as the site of the world’s largest deposit of alluvial gold.

Discover everything there is to know about gold, mining and history at Goldfields.
